Deck restoration: clean, sand and re-coat

Melbourne decks take a beating: summer sun greys the timber and winter damp brings mould. We clean and sand back the weathering, then re-coat with a stain that brings the grain back and protects the boards.

Whether it's a courtyard deck that needs a refresh before the warm weather or a large entertaining area, we'll talk you through the best finish for your timber.

A deck that only needs a wash is covered by our house washing and deck cleaning service.

Frequently asked questions

Can you restore my deck, or does it need replacing?
Most weathered decks can be brought back with a clean, sand and fresh coat. If boards are past saving, we'll tell you when we look at it.
How long does a deck restoration take?
It depends on the size of the deck and the drying time between coats. We'll give you a timeframe with your quote.
How much does deck restoration cost?
There's no set price for a full restoration, because it depends on the deck's size and shape, the timber, how weathered it is, the condition of the boards, and how many coats it needs. If the deck only needs a clean, the deck and patio price guide is on our house washing and deck cleaning page. Sanding and recoating are extra work on top of a clean, so a restoration costs more. Text Wayne photos of the deck and your suburb on 0423 916 005 for a free, no-obligation quote.
Do you clean the deck before re-coating?
Yes. We clean and sand back first so the new coat bonds properly.
Deck oil or stain: which is better?
Neither is better for every deck; it comes down to the look you want and how much upkeep you're happy with. Clear oils soak in and show off the natural grain, but generally need topping up more often. Tinted stains add colour, which helps even out weathered or patchy boards. Decks in full sun wear any finish faster than shaded ones. Tell us your timber and how much sun and foot traffic the deck gets, and we'll suggest a finish when we quote. We clean, sand and stain decks.
How often does a deck need re-coating or re-staining?
There's no fixed timetable, because sun, foot traffic and the product all change how fast a finish wears. Decks in full sun, especially facing north or west, wear fastest, while shaded decks last longer between coats but are more prone to mould and slipperiness. Signs it's due: water no longer beads on the boards, the colour has worn off the busy paths, or the timber is turning grey. Recoating before the finish wears right through is usually easier than a full restoration later. Text Wayne a photo and we'll tell you what your deck needs.
Do you build new decks?
No. We restore existing timber decks: clean, sand and re-coat.
Are you insured?
Yes. We carry public liability insurance.
